Record-Breaking Results for DECA at International Career Development Conference

DECA students all together

The DECA club just returned from our International Career Development Conference, the highest level of DECA competition. We brought 61 students on the trip to Anaheim, CA, as our students competed against 23,000 students from around the world.

It was another record breaking trip for our club. We had 14 students recognized as finalists (school record), and 11 of those students made it to top-10 in the world. In addition, 4 students were recognized as 2nd place in the world in their respective events. If you know any of these students, please congratulate them:

  • Kunaal Chhabra & Varun Wanjari – 2nd Place – School Based Enterprise (Food)
  • Jeremiah Lwin & Matthew Fischer – 2nd Place – Business Growth Plan
  • Ava Gonzalez – 6th place – Sports & Entertainment Marketing
  • Shreyu Koteshwara, Ekam Singh, and Aaryan Wanjari – 6th place – Finance Operations Research Project
  • Riya Jonnala & Ava Datta – 8th place – Business Law & Ethics Team Decision Making
  • Olivia Yang – 10th place – Principles of Finance
  • Maris Menenberg – top 20 – Principles of Business Management & Administration
  • Robert Fischer – top 20 – Business Services Marketing
  • Owen Ostrom – top 10 role play score – Business Finance

"I am so thankful to all the amazing people who make these kinds of competition possible. Thank you to Cheryl Furey & Alex Stevens (along with 5 awesome parents) for giving of your time and chaperoning the trip. Thank you to the many, many people who help with the planning and paperwork: Margaret Pfeifle, Amy Eberhardt, Jenny Sauer, Cynthia Lorrain (and the whole CTE team)," teacher and adviser Andrew Shanafelt said.

"Thank you also to the Issaquah Schools Foundation and Issaquah Boosters for financial support of the club. Thank you also to the 80+ parents, alumni, and community volunteers who helped out with a variety of events this year. It really takes a village, and we are so thankful for all of it. And, of course, thank you to my co-advisor Cheryl Furey, for the countless hours she spends with the kids mentoring and coaching them, and in particular helping with the School Based Enterprise paper that came in 2nd place in the world."
