Eagle Recognized as First Team All-State for Football
Issaquah High School senior Blake Blumenthal is the First Team All-State Punter, as selected by the Washington State Football Coaches Association, officials announced this week. Blumenthal was selected from among all 60 4A football teams in Washington state, and one of only three athletes from our league to be recognized on the all-state team.
“When I first found out I made the All-State team, I could hardly believe it. The excitement was overwhelming, but there was one thing I couldn’t ignore — I was selected as a punter,” he said. “This didn’t make sense to me, as my main position is wide receiver, and I considered myself to be just an average punter. Even though I was and still am surprised, I’m extremely grateful for the recognition. I know that it’s not just my individual effort that got me here, but the support from my coaches and teammates, and for that, I’m truly thankful.”
Blumenthal said he loves football because it’s exhilarating and competitive. “There’s nothing like stepping onto the field, making big plays, and giving the people a show to watch. But what makes it even better is sharing those moments with family and friends, who all play a part in my athletic career,” he added.
Eagles Football Coach Joshua Brookshire said Blumenthal has been a high performer in the program for multiple years. “He has primarily played receiver, where he led the division in receiving yards this season and played safety this year where he was tied for the division lead in interceptions. He had a similar impact on our team at punter,” Brookshire said. “Blake consistently made the spectacular look regular; he led the league this year in net punting yardage and had an incredible ability to put the ball in positions that were advantageous to our coverage unit.”
He noted that in order to be eligible for this achievement, an athlete had to be selected to a first team all-conference position as well and then be voted on by the 4A coaches from across the state.
