Classroom Cultural Highlight: Chinese Sugar Painting (糖画)

Chinese New Year artwork in class with students at tables.

In our Chinese language class, students recently participated in a traditional Chinese sugar painting (糖画) activity as part of our Lunar New Year cultural learning. Using melted sugar, students created symbolic designs such as fish, horses for the Year of the Horse, and other New Year motifs.

This hands-on activity introduced students to a traditional Chinese folk art while reinforcing the cultural meanings behind the designs. For example, fish represent abundance and prosperity (年年有余), and the horse symbolizes energy and perseverance in Chinese culture.

Through experiential learning like this, students not only practice language in a meaningful context but also gain a deeper understanding of Chinese traditions, values, and symbolism, bringing culture to life beyond the textbook.

Three students show their Lunar New Year artwork.
