Potential Student Walkouts; A Message From Principal Connolly

message from...

Dear Issaquah High School Families, Students and Staff,

Some family, caregiver and community members have reached out with safety concerns about a possible student walkout on October 7 in recognition of the Israel-Hamas War.  We want to reassure you that the expectations and support we have in place prioritize the safety and well-being of our students and staff.

In addition to receiving some school community concerns, we are aware that some local and national social media accounts and outside groups, which are not approved or recognized clubs at the school, are encouraging student walkouts on Oct. 7 at our high school. In past years, student-led walkout participation has been limited, peaceful and respectful. Recently, a few unapproved and inappropriate posters promoting the walkout have been placed on campus and between IMS and our school grounds and promptly removed. Unfortunately, some were glued to surfaces, making removal more difficult.

If some students choose to walk out, it is important that families understand our role and response. We respect students’ First Amendment rights to peaceful assembly and free expression under ISD Regulation 3223 (Freedom of Assembly). However, leaving class without prior approval will be treated as an unexcused absence, and once students leave campus, the school cannot supervise their actions. At the same time, please note:

  • Our school is a closed campus, and only current students and staff are permitted on school grounds during the day.

  • Any speech or behavior that is harassing, intimidating, discriminatory, uncivil, bullying and/or substantially disrupting the orderly operation as described in ISD Regulation 3207 (Prohibition Against Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying) and ISD Regulation 3210 (Nondiscrimination) will not be tolerated.

  • Damaging school or district property will be documented, reported to authorities and may result in student discipline as described in ISD Regulation 3241 (Classroom Management, Discipline and Corrective Action).

With these expectations in mind, we encourage families and caregivers to talk with your children about making thoughtful choices and understanding both their rights and responsibilities as members of our learning community. For families who would like support in starting or continuing these conversations, here are a few resources:

If your student feels unsafe or uncomfortable, please encourage them to reach out to a counselor, trusted teacher or administrator. Our counseling team will be available to support any student who needs it.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates to families and caregivers if circumstances change, including follow-up communication as needed. Again, thank you for your partnership in helping us maintain a safe, respectful and inclusive school community.

Sincerely,

Erin Connolly, Principal
