October Counselor Corner
Happy Fall Issaquah High School Students and Families!
October Hot Take! Feeling overwhelmed by all you have to do? Instead of turning to your phone to doom scroll on Tik Tok, try some of the techniques below to combat Task Paralysis!
It feels like we are finally back in the swing of things, which means pumpkin spice and everything nice at our favorite coffee stands, and for some of us it can be the return of that feeling that there is too much to do, and you don’t know where to start. This is completely normal! And there is a name for it: Task Paralysis. We all deal with it, and when we don’t address it, we are unable to make progress on any of our tasks, even those most important to us. Below are some great ideas for students and adults alike when you have that overwhelming feeling of “I have too much to do, I don’t know where to start!” If you need help practicing these techniques, or they are not enough to help you get unstuck, you can also see your school counselor for help.
Lunch Time Counselor Corner
IHS Counselors host a ‘Counselor Corner’ 1st and 2nd lunch 5 days a week in the 2100 hallway outside the counseling office. Stop by to say hi and get your questions big and small answered without having to book an appointment or miss class. We look forward to seeing you!

All Students – Outside Credit: Many of you access the many opportunities in our community to earn credit for high school. We love that our students can take enrichment classes and experiences and make them relevant to their high school diploma. Please remember that these outside credit experiences and learning opportunities must be approved by your IHS counselor BEFORE you begin your learning experience/activity (including outside PE). We cannot retroactively award credit for things completed prior to receiving authorization. Wondering if your activity or learning experience might earn you credit? Stop by to see your counselor before/after school or during both lunches or book an appointment with us here!
Seniors (12th graders): On Tuesday September 24th Counselors hosted our annual College 101 presentation during homeroom for all seniors. This presentation was also emailed to families last week. Additionally, you can find all the details you need on how to apply for college, order your transcript in Parchment, and request any letters of recommendation needed on the College and Post High School Planning page of the IHS School Counseling website. You can also find the presentation on this same page under “Additional Resources (NCAA, CADRs, WAGAP).”
The College and Career Center will be hosting a presentation for all seniors in homeroom on Tuesday October 8th in the IHS Theater on paying for post high school options, including trade schools, 2-year college, and 4-year college and university. They will go over the importance of completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA) for any and all students who will be paying tuition for post high school training and learning. They will also talk about scholarships! Don’t forget to check out IHS College and Career Center website for information and help on these topics.
Juniors and Seniors (11th and 12th graders): You can now make your appointment to have your counselor sign your Winter Quarter Running Start Enrollment Verification Form (EVF). Bellevue College will begin accepting your EVF on Oct 14th. CWU, RTC, and LWIT Running Start students are also welcome to see us to get your EVF form signed and returned to your respective college. Remember, the earlier you turn in your EVF, the earlier you are eligible to register for Winter Quarter classes. Classes can fill up fast, don’t delay!
Freshman, Sophomores and Juniors (9th, 10th and 11th graders): IHS will administer the PSAT on October 23rd. Please watch IHS bulletin for the schedule for that day. IHS Counselors will see all 9th graders and will start the 9th grade portion of the High School and Beyond Plan (HSBP). This is a requirement for graduation and fun activity where we get to help students explore their interests beyond high school.
